How To: Stay Sane While Working from Home
While all of us are doing what we can to slow the spread of COVID-19, we have to properly take care of our mental health. If you find yourself working from home, some of these tips may help you adapt and thrive. Take a gander:
1. Set an alarm and get up in the morning
Avoid sleeping all day. This will likely make everything seem more hopeless. Try to be productive, even if that just means making breakfast or going for a safe walk.
2. Try to keep the same routine you've had in the morning
You don't have to go as far as this guy recreating his morning commute in his shower, but some consistency is key.
3. Designate a specific space for working (it doesn't necessarily have to be a room - even if it's just a corner)
Choose an area where you feel comfortable and there are few distractions. The beauty of working from home: you can work on the couch in your pajamas and no one would be the wiser (or care, as long as you're getting work done).
4. Keep that area free of clutter and distractions
Unless you work better with tunes in the background. Also, some people work better with a little chaos--no problem.
5. Get dressed and change out of pajamas
Contrary to what was stated in step 3, you might feel better and more productive if you do in fact change out of your pajamas. I would keep it comfy but if putting on a suite makes you feel more sanguine, do so!
6. Schedule breaks
Take a break for lunch (in another area). Take an afternoon tea break and walk outside.
7. Schedule time for specific tasks and take things in small chunks
Especially if you are feeling overwhelmed. Managing your time effectively when working from home (and the office) is key.
8. Set an end time for the end of the day and leave your work there.
Maintain a good work-life balance, especially when working from home. You don't want the lines of work and home to be blurred in the process of adapting to working from home.
Working from home can be an great opportunity to be comfortable while doing your work. Make sure you are checking in with who ever you work with to make sure everything is running smoothly while you can not meet in person to maintain social distancing.
